Synopsis

Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) is a skilled, workaholic medical intern in residence, putting in long hours and with no time for relationships outside the hospital. After a 26 hour shift, she drives to meet a blind date arranged by her sister (Dina Waters, wife of director Mark Waters), and, distracted, is struck head-on by a truck.

Later, David (Mark Ruffalo) seeks a new residence in San Francisco and leases the apartment formerly owned by Elizabeth. Lethargic and despondent over the untimely loss of his wife, he spends his time eating junk food and staring at the TV.

His depression is interrupted by the appearance of Elizabeth, demanding that he leave her apartment. First suspecting he was the victim of a rent scam, he realizes that Elizabeth is a ghostly spirit of some kind, and is able to pass through walls and other matter. Elizabeth insists that she is not dead, but is otherwise unable to remember her identity. Mark agrees to help her solve the mystery of who she is and what has happened to her. In their search, they find they few around her knew her well because of her long work hours, but they ultimately learn that she has actually been in a persistent coma for three months at her old hospital.

Believing that her case is hopeless, and arguing that Elizabeth didn't believe in artificially prolonging life, the hospital wants her sister to sign their authorization to remove Elizabeth from the life support machinery. David and Elizabeth frantically search for a way to stop them from pulling the plug.
