Synopsis

Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves) is a bachelor architect who has moved into a unique glass walled house, built over the lake on stilts. He finds a letter in his mailbox, apparently from the previous occupant, asking him to forward her mail. She is Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock) a lonely doctor in the city. Her letter, however, refers to events that have not happened, and it is dated 2006, while, for Alex, it is 2004.

As they exchange further correspondence, they discover they are living in different times, two years apart. Kate has moved into an apartment complex that, in Alex's time, has not yet been built. The mailbox in front of the lake house acts as the conduit for their time separated letters.

Alex has a bitter relationship with his father, Simon Wyler (Christopher Plummer), a world famous architect. When Simon dies from a heart attack, Kate sends Alex his not-yet-published (in 2004) biography which reveals that the proud father actually did love his son.

Kate and Alex make a date for dinner, two years in the future for Alex, at a posh restaurant*. Kate arrives and waits, but Alex never shows.

Kate visits Alex's younger brother, Henry (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), another architect in the family, about her plans for an investment property, where she learns that Alex had been killed after being struck by a car. She frantically rushes in hopes there is still time to prevent that from happening in Alex's time.
