Synopsis

Will Atenton (Daniel Craig) quits his job as an editor in a big city publishing house to spend time with his wife Libby (Rachel Weisz) and their two children, Trish (Taylor Geare) and Dee Dee (Claire Geare) in their new suburban home. Their peace is soon interrupted by intruders and spying trespassers. The neighbors seem to watch Will warily, and the police respond to his complaints about intruders with indifference. The only exception is neighbor Ann Patterson (Naomi Watts) who, while cautious, appears concerned for him.

Will learns that, five years ago, a mother and two young daughters were murdered in the home, and that the primary suspect was the husband, Peter Ward. He was held in a mental institution for five years, but released because there was no actual evidence of his guilt. Will believes that it is Ward who is stalking him and his family.

Attempting to get information on Peter Ward, Will visits a psychiatrist who was involved with the case. He learns a shocking truth. He is actually Peter Ward, and that his family is dead. He begins to understand that, in shock, his mind created a fictional reality where his family is still with him. He is determined to learn the identity of the killer, even if it is himself.

Peter returns to his home, now recognizing it as an empty and decrepit structure. But Libby (either as a hallucination or a ghost) isn't ready to let him go. They are interrupted by Ann's husband, Jack Patterson (Marton Csokas) and Boyce (Elias Koteas) who have come to finish a job they'd attempted five years ago. Patterson had hired Boyce to kill his wife, but Boyce went to the wrong house and, in a panic, killed Libby and the daughters. They knock out Peter, tie up Ann, and set fire to the house. Guided by Libby's love, Peter revives consciousness and rescues Ann from the burning house, as Jack and Boyce die. Peter re-enters the house to say a final goodbye to his wife and daughters before letting go of them.
