Synopsis

Xiao Jia (Gigi Leung), a student at a Chinese university, is in love with another student, Wen Tao (Dawei Tong), but finds it difficult to convey her feelings to him. She obtains an old ham radio and one night a young man, Jia Hui (Ken Zhu), makes contact with her. Discovering that they both attend the same university, they make plans to meet next to the statue of Chairman Mao.

The next day, Xiao waits there, in the sun, but Jia doesn't show up. We are also shown him waiting as well, however it is pouring rain. That evening, they again make radio contact and accuse each other of not keeping the appointment. Eventually, they realize that they are communicating from different times - she is in 1981, he in 2003.

Jia remembers that his own parents went to that university in the same time period, and eagerly asks Xiao if she knows them. Jia's father is Wen Tao, and his mother is So-Eun's best friend. She is devastated.

Sky of Love poster

Xiao knows she must forget Jia. He, in the meantime, intuits that she has feelings for the man who would become his father. He finds out that now, in 2003, Xiao is a teacher at another university, having requested a transfer there for personal reasons. He goes there, determined to learn if she is content, or if losing Wen Tao has made her an unhappy woman.

He enters the school corridor, just as students emerge from Xiao's classroom. She steps into the hallway and walks slowly down the hallway, away from him. He decides not to intrude on her life.

Trailer

The film is almost an exact remake of the Korean film Ditto, although the final scene is more downbeat. The DVD case mistakenly states that it is a remake of Il Mare, a similar tale of time separated communication. Il Mare was remade as The Lake House, and Frequency, while not a remake, is about ham radio communication between characters in different times.
